by Tom Tognoli, President/CEO, Intero Real Estate Services
We are ALL given the opportunity to be leaders…
This past Friday evening I had the pleasure of giving an inspirational message at an event where several people from Intero where being installed as new officers and some being recognized for their past service. A huge shout out to Craig Gorman from Intero, the now former President of SCCAOR, for his passion and leadership over the last year.
What I loved most about the evening was seeing two of Intero’s “under 30” agents, Trisha Motter and Mike D’Ambrosio, being installed as leaders into one of the largest real estate organizations in the country. Mike is 29 and Trish is 28. Trish was installed at President and Mike at Treasurer.
Can you imagine at the age of 28 being installed as the President of anything…much less one of the largest real estate association in the world.
I have been blessed in my life with the opportunity to lead and inspire people to be the best they can be for more than 20 years. When I first stepped into management back in 1993 I was naive and thought that being a manager automatically made me a leader…I soon discovered becoming a manger actually put a target on you and not a cape. It took me a while to figure it out but I soon discovered that being a manager is something others give you…becoming a leader is something you have to earn and become yourself.
So, what is it that makes a great leader? What is it that being a great leader isn’t
What I shared with the 350 people in attendance on Friday night is what I have learned leadership IS and what leadership ISN’T over the last couple of decades.
The truth of the matter is that all of us are given the opportunity to be LEADERS at some point in our lives whether we like it or not. We will lead others in some if not all the equities of their life…their F5 (Faith, Family, Friends, Fitness, and Finance). We will lead Friends…Family…Children…Teams…Organizations…Companies…Non Profits. We all are leaders.
So…what is leadership and what isn’t it?
8 hours a day
saying what they want to hear
hateful & mean
it’s not a job
not putting others down
saying what they need to hear
humble & compassionate
it’s a purpose
lifting others up
a way of life
being a visionary
Always remember it’s not your title or what you say that makes you a great leader…it is who you are and how you act that makes you a great leader.
BE A LEADER!!!!
