What is a widget anyway? A widget is a funny little word for a small mechanical or electronic device…it is really any thingamajig or doohickey. But its significance is huge. In business, the everyday goal of the company and its employees is to continually improve the widgets that makes them and their company successful. Could you imagine if Apple wasn’t constantly working to improve and refine the iPhone (their widget) and their other products (widgets)? No way. The same applies to all businesses. If you aren’t obsessed with constantly improving and innovating, you won’t last. That’s just what the best companies in the world do.
In all of this hustle and bustle of trying to improve the company widget, there is one thing that is overlooked by most people. That is, taking care of the most important widget of all…YOU. Although they expect a lot from their people and are very demanding, most of the high tech companies here in Silicon Valley do a very good job at making sure their employees are taking care of themselves. They know that if their employees are not the best they can be, the company products and culture probably won’t be either. They have cafeterias with healthy food, gyms with state of the art equipment, massage therapists, pilates and yoga classes…you name it. They provide these perks to make sure their most important asset is being taken care of…their people.
Now most companies in the world don’t make the kind of money these high tech Silicon Valley companies do, so they can’t afford to provide some of these perks. However, that does not change what we need to do to be the best we can be for ourselves, our company, or family and our friends.
Look…YOU are the single most important widget you have. You need to treat YOU like you and your company treat their company widget. This is why I always talk about F5 (Faith, Family, Friends, Fitness and Finance). Because I know for people to be the best that can be at work, school, or whatever it is you do the majority of your waking hours, you need to be the best YOU that you can be. Does that make sense? I hope so. Especially in a business like real estate, or any sales business for that matter, you ARE the widget in your business. You need to work every day on improving and refining from the inside out, and be committed to creating a better YOU every day.
Be committed to doing this and I promise you will CRUSH IT in business, life, your relationships, you name it…
